Welwitchia Images of Dierk Wanke
Images were made on a trip to RSA and Namibia in September 1997. The plants are found in the so called "Welwitchia Plain" some kilometres east of Swakopmund, Namibia. Welwitchias at this site are of an extraorbitant age compared with other higher plants ( several 100 years) and don`t produce any offspring! Younger plants can be seen in north Angola, where the overall humidity allows forming of a savanna habitat. This might indicate that the climate for sufficiant propagation of the Welwitchias changed throughout their tremendous lifecycle-time at Swakopmund.
